We saw Bob’s cousins Denny and Donny, they live outside Las Vegas where they race cars on weekends. Robert Burchfield, in The New Fowler’s Modern English Usage, comments that “wide variation can be seen in the work of many contemporary writers and, even more so, in that of earlier centuries. Current convention holds that they are inappropriate for many formal contexts, but it’s a bit more complicated than that. Yet they were not always considered ungrammatical this is a relatively recent development. There’s no clearer indication of this intolerance than the fact that comma splices are also known as comma errors, comma faults, and comma blunders. Miss Doreen Valvona was a good reader, she had the best eyes in the ward. Moreover, when authorities dismiss certain techniques out of hand without mentioning the breadth of their usage in various stylistic and historical contexts, they can perpetuate fear of making mistakes and ignorance of how language works.Īpes have flat feet, we have sprung arches. But it also tends to be simplistic and misleading, failing to reflect the subtlety and complexity with which skilled writers consciously use comma splices. This kind of advice can be helpful to learners, or writers who want a quick yes–no answer. “nly do it if you’re famous,” Lynne Truss warns. Even when they are acknowledged to be occasionally acceptable, we are told to avoid them to be on the safe side. We are urged to spurn them, to expunge them swiftly and severely as though they were insidious “germs” in our otherwise unsullied text. The blue, igloo-roof over the rock went away to a vast distance, the visible world expanded with a leap. ![]() I had worn the wrong shoes, they had heels. I am such a good man, at bottom, such a good man, how is it that nobody ever noticed it? – Samuel Beckett, Malone Dies # parameters to specify the width and height ratios between rows and columns We can also customize the height and width of each Gridspec coordinate using the arguments “height_ratios” and “width_ratios” respectively when creating the Gridspec object. # the fourth subplot will span two rows and one columnĪx3.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 3, \ngspec coordinates ", ha='center') # the third subplot will span one row and one columnĪx2.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 2, \ngspec coordinates ", ha='center') ![]() # the second subplot will span one row and one columnĪx1.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 1, \ngspec coordinates ", ha='center') # the first subplot will span one row and two columnsĪx0.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 0, \ngspec coordinates ", ha='center') Gspec = fig.add_gridspec(nrows=2, ncols=3) The units of this padding are in percentages of the default font size. The argument “pad” adds padding between subplots and the figure boarders, while “h_pad” and “w_pad” add height and width padding between subplots. If we want to add some extra padding between subplots, we can add some arguments to override the default tight_layout parameters. This will create the following set of plots: Finally, we’ll use the Axes object to generate the plot:įig, ,] = plt.subplots(nrows=2, ncols=2)Īx0.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 0", ha='center')Īx1.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 1", ha='center')Īx2.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 2", ha='center')Īx3.text(0.5, 0.5, "This is axes object 3", ha='center') Next we access this Axes object using the Figure object’s “gca” method, which stands for “get current axes”. First, we’ll generate a Figure object using Pyplot which will automatically create an axes object behind the scenes. To create the plot above using Matplotlib’s object oriented syntax we need to make a few small modifications to the original code. Figure objects can contain one or multiple Axes objects, each representing an individual chart (this can be a big source of confusion when learning Matplotlib, the term “axes object” is inherited from Matlab and refers to an entire chart rather than a x or y axis). I think of this as the blank canvas that the plots will be generated on. Figure objects represent the containers that hold a visualization. By directly accessing and working with this object oriented structure we can create highly customized visualizations.įor the purposes of this blog, there are two Matplotlib objects that are important: Figure objects and Axes objects. Luckily, the Matlab style syntax is simply hiding an object oriented code structure that is at the core of Matplotlib. While the Matlab style syntax is easy to use, it is actually quite limiting in its ability to create custom visualizations. For example, to create a simple line plot we can use the following code: As such, one way we can create visualizations using Matplotlib is through “Matlab style” syntax which is contained within Matplotlib’s flagship module, Pyplot. As it’s name suggests, Matplotlib was originally created as a means of replicating Matlab style plotting functionality in Python. A brief introduction to Matplotlib’s object oriented syntax Since Python is an open source language, there are multiple ways of creating and working with subplots, so in this post I’ll outline a few ways that work for me, and provide some context about how things work behind the scenes in Matplotlib. I’ve chosen to devote this post to making subplots, a task often necessary for scientific visualizations that can be surprisingly frustrating if you don’t understand Matplotlib’s structure. With this in mind, I’m writing this post to serve as a guide for those new to plotting with Matplotlib, and to help fill in some gaps for those who are already experienced Matplotlib users. While constructing the summer course, I realized how much time I could have saved if I had learned how Matplotlib worked earlier in my PhD. I don’t think my experience is uncommon, creating basic visualizations in Python is fairly straight forward, and a quick Google search will yield tutorials on how to make most common plot types. ![]() Over the course of my graduate career I’ve taken several courses on programming and Python, and each time visualization or plotting was viewed as an afterthought. I recently created a summer course on data visualization with Python, and the experience made me realize that the workings of Python’s main visualization library, Matplotlib, are often left of out formal Python courses. I hope that Orange City Library upholds the values that they claim, and that the city holds onto that hopeful energy from that first Pride festival. And when there’s change, there’s pushback. Times are changing: Even small towns, even religious areas, even traditionally conservative areas. Downtown was filled with people sporting rainbow heart stickers. Despite negative feedback online, the event was entirely positive, with a big turnout, including people coming from as far away as Arizona. Last year, Orange City has its first Pride festival. What are the chances the library is going to arrange a town meeting every time they want to buy a new LGBTQ book? Easier to just not order it in at all. Of course, it being cumbersome is entirely the point. The idea is ludicrous, especially for someone who used to be on the library board to propose. Imagine debating every book or movie or CD or video game publicly before it was allowed inclusion. Orange City manages a collection of 63,000 items. What will the sticker say? “RESTRICTED”? This picture book is not appropriate for all ages? Will it be a rainbow, the symbol of Pride, slapped onto the books to appease people who think shame is a more apt response? It breaks my heart to think of someone closeted or questioning trying to sneak into the LGBTQ section of the library, frantically scanning the shelves and hiding the LGBTQ sticker on the book they selected. It is cruel to demand that people’s identities be publicly debated before a picture book that includes them can be placed in the library collection. ![]() It is unethical to deny people access to media that could improve their lives. In 2015, I wrote a post called Kids Need Queer Books, and most of what I have to say remains the same. ![]() President of the Iowa Library Association Dan Chibnall said “We believe people should have access to as much material as possible, and it’s up to them as a community to decide what they should read and what they should and should not read with their families.” The Orange City Public Library follows the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, which states materials should “not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval” or excluded because of sex, gender identity or sexual orientation. Obviously, he would prefer that the library had no mention of LGBTQ material at all, but making it difficult to get will have to suffice. He was particularly disturbed by the book title Two Boys Kissing. Clearly, if books like Morris Micklewhite and just the title of Two Boys Kissing are the examples, it’s merely the existence of LGBTQ representation that’s the problem. “We’re not asking for banning because I know that would just sink our ship,” Chi says. (I wonder how that would fare on the proposed content rating service.)Īccording to Chi’s own numbers, the LGBTQ content in Orange City’s library accounts for less than. Next month, the board will specifically review the library’s inclusion of Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress, a picture book about a boy who likes wearing dresses. Not only should LGBTQ books be kept separate from the main collection and labelled, but, he argues, they should also have a “content rating service.” On February 20th, a group of Orange City residents gathered to petition the library to segregate their LGBTQ materials, and to stop acquiring new LGBTQ materials unless the community collectively agreed to it. The petition was starting by Terry Chi, an assistant professor of Northwestern College, a Christian college. Danika spends most of her time talking about queer women books at the Lesbrary. Batch 108, released November, 2020, Selected and arranged by: LARS ULRICH: Kentucky - This batch of BLACKENED American Whiskey is blasted with its very. Throughout this process, Dave tests the whiskey to determine the optimal color and flavor profile for each batch. The NAS whiskey is blended then finished in. Here’s how it’s made: First, it’s not a bourbon or a rye, but a blend, of bourbon, rye, and other whiskeys all unspecified. The movement of the whiskey and the amount of interaction depends on the song being played, so the variation of the music creates a slight nuance from one batch to the next. Crafted by Maker’s Mark veteran (and current WhistlePig distiller) Dave Pickerell, Blackened isn’t a gimmick, though it does stretch some industry boundaries. As the well-aged whiskey rests in the finishing barrels, the music is played to the barrel causing the whiskey inside to move and interact with the wood. Each batch of BLACKENED has a unique playlist that was used to sonically-enhance the whiskey during finishing. Easy to find on a crowded bar and easy to pour. Tall in stature, with a long neck and a distinctive, angular shoulder, our bespoke bottle was crafted with the barman in mind. The process the whiskey undergoes is intense the flavor is anything but. Using our proprietary sonic-enhancement system BLACK NOISE™, the whiskey is pummeled by sound, causing it to seep deeper into the barrel, where it picks up additional wood flavor characteristics. After the whiskeys have been combined in the black brandy casks for finishing, they’re jolted back to life by the unmistakable, earth-shattering music of Metallica. The result is an added apricot note that plays perfectly alongside the honey and caramel tones of the pre-finished spirit. For BLACKENED, Dave chose to finish the whiskey in black brandy casks. By resting the whiskey in the barrel of another spirit during the maturation phase, the whiskey picks up some of the unique, residual flavors left behind in the barrel. Dave is renowned for his whiskey finishes-an aspect he calls “flavoring for adults”. Pairs perfectly with the savory spice offered by the high rye composition. Predominately bourbon, the sweetness of BLACKENED Each of the whiskeys offer unique flavor that play a key role in the final spirit. ![]() BLACKENED is a marriage of the finest bourbons, ryes and whiskeys, hand selected by Dave himself.
